Phylogenesis
Phylogenesis refers to the evolutionary history and development of a lineage, including the origins of its member species and the branching patterns that connect them. It focuses on how lineages diverge from common ancestors and accumulate diversity over geologic time. In some contexts the term is used interchangeably with phylogeny, but many biologists distinguish phylogenesis (the process and history of evolution in a lineage) from phylogeny (the inferred pattern of relationships among taxa).
Researchers study phylogenesis through multiple lines of evidence. Fossil records provide direct but incomplete glimpses of
Applications of phylogenesis include revising taxonomic classifications, tracing patterns of adaptive radiation and biogeography, and informing
