In botany and biomimetics, phyllobased approaches aim to replicate leaf-level processes—such as efficient light capture, gas exchange, and the distribution networks of leaf veins—to guide design in other domains. The concept emphasizes modular, leaf-inspired patterns and surface properties that contribute to efficiency and resilience.

Applications span biomimetic materials with leaf-like microstructures to improve light management or moisture handling, leaf-based substrates for sustainable packaging, and architectural or textile systems that imitate leaf surface properties for cooling or shading.

Limitations include the lack of a formal, standardized definition and potential overuse in interdisciplinary contexts. As a niche or emerging term, phyllobased is primarily found in speculative, design-oriented, or early-stage research discourse.
