Photondominated

Photondominated describes a regime in which photons and radiative processes principally determine the physical state, evolution, and chemistry of a system, more than mechanical or collisional processes. In such regimes, photoheating, photoionization, and photodissociation rates shape the temperature, ionization balance, and molecular composition, while collisional excitation and cooling play a secondary role.

In astrophysics, photondominated conditions are common in photon-dominated or photoionized environments. The gas near hot, luminous stars experiences intense ultraviolet radiation that drives ionization fronts and photochemistry, giving rise to photon-dominated regions and H II regions. The spectral energy distribution and radiation field strength strongly influence observable emission lines and continuum diagnostics. In the early universe, radiation fields could momentarily dominate the energy density in certain epochs, affecting ionization and chemical pathways. In planetary atmospheres and protoplanetary disks, external and internal radiation fields can set the vertical structure and chemistry in the upper layers.

Quantitatively, photondominated behavior is often assessed by comparing radiative rates to collisional rates and by using the ionization parameter or radiation-field strength as a key control factor. Modeling typically relies on photoionization and photodissociation codes that solve radiative transfer and chemical networks, predicting line and continuum emission for comparison with observations. Common diagnostics include infrared fine-structure lines and molecular transitions sensitive to the radiation field.
