Fine structure refers to small splittings of atomic energy levels and the associated spectral lines that arise from relativistic and spin-related effects in quantum mechanics. In nonrelativistic models, energy levels depend mainly on the principal quantum number n, but when relativistic corrections are included, levels split according to the total angular momentum j, which combines orbital angular momentum l with spin s.

The primary contributors to fine structure are the relativistic kinetic-energy correction, the spin-orbit interaction (the coupling of the electron’s spin to its orbital motion), and, in some treatments, the Darwin term that accounts for Zitterbewegung-like effects. In hydrogen-like atoms, these corrections lift the degeneracy of states with the same n and l but different j, producing distinct components in observed spectra. The magnitude of the splitting grows with nuclear charge Z and scales roughly with (Zα)^2, where α is the fine-structure constant, about 1/137. In light elements, splittings are typically small; in heavier elements, they become more pronounced.

Fine structure is distinct from hyperfine structure, which arises from interactions with nuclear spin and magnetic moments, and from Lamb shift, which results from quantum electrodynamic effects. The term also appears in astrophysics as “fine-structure lines,” referring to infrared or submillimeter transitions between closely spaced levels in ions such as [C II], [O I], and [N II], important for diagnosing interstellar and intergalactic environments. Overall, fine structure provides a key window into relativistic and quantum effects in atomic systems.
