Photactivated

Photactivated describes systems, molecules, or processes that require exposure to light to become active. Activation can be reversible or irreversible and typically involves absorption of photons that promote electrons to excited states, triggering chemical reactions, conformational changes, or signaling events.

In chemistry and materials science, photactivation refers to the initiation of chemical or physical changes by light. Common examples include photolysis of protecting groups to release active compounds (caged compounds), activation of light-responsive catalysts, and light-induced crosslinking or surface modification of polymers and polymers-based materials. Photactivation enables spatial and temporal control in experiments and manufacturing.

In biology, photactivated, or photoactivated, describes proteins and systems that change function when illuminated. Many photoreceptor proteins contain chromophores such as retinal, flavins, or bilin pigments that undergo conformational changes upon photon absorption.
