Philepitta

Philepitta is a genus of birds endemic to Madagascar. The genus contains two species, both commonly known as ground-rollers. These birds are characterized by their terrestrial habits, preferring to forage on the ground for insects and other invertebrates. They are found in various habitats across Madagascar, including forests, woodlands, and savannas.

The two species within the genus are the Pitta ground-roller (Philepitta pittoides) and the Blue-headed ground-roller (Philepitta cyanea). The Pitta ground-roller is a larger species with predominantly brown and black plumage, while the Blue-headed ground-roller is smaller and exhibits striking blue coloration on its head and breast. Both species build their nests in burrows excavated in the ground or in termite mounds.

Philepitta ground-rollers are known for their distinctive calls, which vary between species and are often used for communication and territorial defense. Their diet consists mainly of insects, larvae, spiders, and occasionally small vertebrates. They are an important part of the Madagascan ecosystem, contributing to insect control and seed dispersal.
