In biology, pheromones coordinate activities such as foraging, mating, and defense. They can be volatile and detected through the air or contact-based. Major categories include sex, aggregation, alarm, and trail pheromones. Examples: ant and termite trail pheromones guide collective foraging; moth sex pheromones attract mates at a distance; bee queen pheromones influence colony organization and reproduction.

Artificial and computational uses include algorithms like ant colony optimization that use virtual pheromones to guide search, and pheromone-inspired signaling in robot swarms or material delivery systems. In addition, researchers study pheromone-based release systems and sensors that respond to or regulate chemical cues.

Applications include pest management through mating disruption, pheromone traps, and lure-and-kill strategies, offering alternatives to broad-spectrum insecticides. These approaches aim to reduce crop damage while limiting non-target effects and chemical load. Challenges include production cost, stability under environmental conditions, specificity, and the potential for pests to adapt to pheromone cues.

Research areas cover longer-lasting pheromones, controlled-release formulations, and integration with other attractants or cues. Regulatory and ethical considerations address environmental safety, ecological impact, and the appropriate deployment of pheromone-based products in agricultural or urban settings.
