Unlike pharmacokinetic studies, which focus on what the body does to the drug (absorption, distribution, metabolism, excretion), pharmacodynamic studies examine how a drug interacts with its target in the body to produce a therapeutic or adverse effect.

These studies aim to understand the relationship between drug concentration at the site of action and the observed effect. This includes determining the mechanism of action, identifying the drug's target (such as a specific receptor or enzyme), and quantifying the intensity and duration of the drug's effect. Key parameters often measured in pharmacodynamic studies include efficacy (the maximal effect a drug can produce) and potency (the drug concentration required to produce a certain effect).

Pharmacodynamic studies can be conducted in vitro using cells or isolated tissues, in vivo in animal models, or in humans. In clinical settings, these studies help establish appropriate dosing regimens, predict potential side effects, and understand individual variability in drug response. They are essential for determining the therapeutic window of a drug and for comparing the effectiveness of different therapeutic agents.
