A PhD programme, or Doctor of Philosophy programme, is a doctoral-level course of study that culminates in the submission and defense of an original research project that contributes new knowledge to a field. It is typically the highest academic degree awarded by universities and is designed to prepare graduates for research, scholarship, and advanced professional roles.

Admission and structure commonly include prerequisites such as a master’s degree or substantial research experience, though some programs admit exceptionally qualified applicants with a bachelor’s degree. Applicants usually submit a research proposal, references, and evidence of language proficiency where required. Most PhD programmes combine some advanced coursework or seminars with the development and approval of a research proposal and candidacy assessment. Students work under supervision on a substantial, original research project, often supported by a supervisory committee and ongoing progress reviews.

Duration and funding vary by country and discipline; full-time study commonly lasts three to six years, with part-time routes available in many cases. Funding may come from scholarships, fellowships, teaching or research assistantships, or employer sponsorship.

Assessment and degree conferral typically involve the preparation of a dissertation or thesis and an oral defense or examination. Examiners assess originality, methodological rigor, and significance. Some programmes require publication of results, conference presentations, or other scholarly outputs as conditions for progression or degree conferment.

Variations exist across regions and disciplines. In some jurisdictions, a master’s degree is required prior to entry to the PhD, while in others an integrated doctoral track admits students with a bachelor’s degree.
