Pflugbearbeitung refers to the process of plowing land, a fundamental agricultural practice. It involves turning over the top layer of soil using a plow, a tool that has evolved significantly over centuries. Historically, plows were simple wooden implements pulled by animals, but modern plows are typically made of steel and are attached to tractors. The primary purpose of plowing is to prepare a seedbed for planting. This preparation involves several key functions.

Plowing buries crop residues, weeds, and organic matter, which can help in disease control and reduce competition for newly sown crops. By inverting the soil, it also exposes fresh nutrients and can improve soil aeration, allowing for better root penetration and water infiltration. The soil structure is broken up, making it easier for seeds to germinate and establish. However, excessive or poorly timed plowing can lead to soil erosion, loss of soil organic matter, and disruption of soil ecosystems, such as beneficial fungi and earthworms. Different types of plows exist, including moldboard plows, which completely invert the soil, and chisel plows, which disturb the soil less. The decision to employ plowing, and the specific method used, depends on factors such as soil type, climate, crop rotation, and conservation goals. Reduced tillage and no-till farming methods have gained popularity as alternatives to conventional plowing, aiming to minimize soil disturbance.
