Petrolkémiában, often translated as petrochemicals, refers to the branch of chemistry that deals with petroleum and natural gas as raw materials. These fossil fuels are the primary sources for a vast array of organic chemicals, which are then transformed into a multitude of products essential to modern life. The petrochemical industry plays a crucial role in the global economy, providing building blocks for plastics, synthetic fibers, solvents, fertilizers, pharmaceuticals, and countless other manufactured goods.

The process typically begins with the refining of crude oil and natural gas. Through distillation, crude oil is separated into fractions based on boiling points, yielding components like naphtha and gas oil. Natural gas is primarily composed of methane. These fractions are then subjected to further processing, such as cracking and reforming, to break down larger hydrocarbon molecules into smaller, more reactive ones. Common petrochemical feedstocks include ethylene, propylene, butadiene, benzene, toluene, and xylenes.

These fundamental petrochemicals are then utilized in various synthesis processes to create polymers, which are the basis of plastics. For instance, ethylene is polymerized to form polyethylene, one of the most widely used plastics. Propylene is converted into polypropylene. Aromatic hydrocarbons like benzene are precursors to substances like styrene, used in polystyrene, and phenol, used in resins. The versatility of these basic chemicals allows for the creation of a wide range of materials with diverse properties, from flexible films to rigid structural components. The petrochemical industry's output is so pervasive that it impacts almost every sector of industry and consumer activity.
