Petrolatumi

Petrolatumi, also known as petroleum jelly or mineral oil jelly, is a semi-solid mixture of hydrocarbons, typically derived from petroleum. It is commonly used as a topical ointment and emollient. Its primary function is to create a barrier on the skin, helping to prevent moisture loss and protect the skin from environmental irritants. This occlusive property makes it effective for moisturizing dry skin, treating minor cuts and burns, and preventing chafing.

Historically, petrolatumi was discovered by Robert Chesebrough in the mid-19th century. He observed oil rig workers using a waxy residue from oil wells to heal their wounds. He refined this substance and marketed it as Vaseline. Over time, it has become a widely available and affordable product.

Petrolatumi is generally considered safe for topical application. However, it is non-comedogenic, meaning it is unlikely to clog pores, although some individuals may experience breakouts. Ingesting petrolatumi is not recommended as it can cause gastrointestinal upset. Its primary uses remain in personal care and skincare applications due to its moisturizing and protective qualities. It is found in numerous cosmetic and pharmaceutical products.
