The bleach symbol, often a triangle, indicates whether chlorine or non-chlorine bleach can be used. The iron symbol, shaped like an iron, shows the recommended heat setting.

Dry cleaning instructions are usually represented by a circle. Different letters within the circle specify the type of solvent or process recommended by the dry cleaner. The tumble dry symbol, a square with a circle inside, uses dots to indicate the appropriate heat setting. A cross through this symbol means the item should not be tumble dried.
