Pestisit

Pestisit is a term used to describe substances and formulations developed to suppress pest populations, including insects, weeds, fungi, and rodents, through chemical, biological, or cultural means. It serves as a broad, non-specific label for pest control agents and does not imply a single mode of action.

Types and mechanisms. Pestisit formulations include chemical pesticides (neurotoxicants, enzyme inhibitors, and metabolic disruptors), biological agents (microbial pesticides, viruses, and entomopathogenic fungi), plant-derived compounds, and behavior-modifying products such as attractants or repellents. Modes of action include nerve disruption, metabolic interference, development inhibition, or interference with reproduction and host finding.

Applications. They are used in agriculture, public health, urban pest management, and stored-product protection. In practice, pestisit use is often guided by integrated pest management to reduce reliance on any single product and to slow resistance development.

Safety and regulation. Regulatory oversight varies by country but typically requires product registration, efficacy and toxicity data, and clear labeling of application rates and precautions. Assessments consider non-target species, persistence in the environment, and potential residues. Worker safety and consumer exposure are addressed through protective equipment recommendations and residue limits, while resistance management is emphasized to maintain effectiveness.

Research and outlook. Ongoing work aims to improve selectivity, reduce environmental impact, and enhance compatibility with IPM. Debates focus on ecological risks, data transparency, and balancing pest protection with environmental health.
