Perustaajuuteen is a Finnish term that translates to "fundamental frequency" in English. It refers to the lowest resonant frequency of a vibrating object or system. In acoustics and music, the fundamental frequency is the pitch of a sound. For example, when a guitar string is plucked, it vibrates at its fundamental frequency, producing a specific note. This frequency is determined by the physical properties of the string, such as its length, tension, and mass.

The fundamental frequency is often the most prominent component of a complex sound. While an object vibrates at its fundamental frequency, it also vibrates at higher frequencies called harmonics or overtones. These harmonics are integer multiples of the fundamental frequency. The combination of the fundamental frequency and its harmonics gives a sound its unique timbre or quality, distinguishing, for instance, a violin's note from a piano's note, even when they are playing the same pitch.

In engineering, the concept of fundamental frequency is crucial for understanding the behavior of structures and mechanical systems. For instance, bridges and buildings have natural frequencies at which they tend to vibrate. If an external force, such as wind or an earthquake, matches one of these natural frequencies, resonance can occur, leading to potentially destructive oscillations. Engineers design structures to avoid resonance by ensuring their fundamental frequencies are different from expected external excitation frequencies. This concept also applies to electrical circuits and other oscillating systems.
