The most prominent example of a perusmerkistö is ASCII (American Standard Code for Information Interchange). ASCII was one of the earliest and most widely adopted character encoding standards, establishing a numerical representation for each character. This allowed different computer systems to communicate and display text consistently.

As computing evolved and the need to represent characters from various languages and scripts grew, the limitations of ASCII became apparent. This led to the development of extended character sets and eventually to Unicode, which aims to provide a unique number for every character, regardless of platform, program, and language.
