Perusgeometrian

Perusgeometrian, or elementary geometry, is the branch of geometry that investigates the properties and relations of figures in two- and three-dimensional space using precise definitions, axioms, and logical deduction. In Finnish educational contexts, perusgeometrian forms the introductory part of geometry education, preparing students for higher mathematics such as trigonometry, calculus, and analytic geometry.

Core concepts include points, lines, planes, and angles, as well as geometric figures such as triangles, quadrilaterals, polygons, and circles. Central ideas are congruence (figures with the same shape and size) and similarity (same shape, possibly different size), as well as properties of parallel and perpendicular lines. The study often proceeds from plane geometry to solid geometry, exploring pyramids, prisms, cylinders, cones, spheres, and other three-dimensional bodies.

Key theorems and constructions underpin reasoning in perusgeometrian. Classic results include properties of triangles, the Pythagorean theorem, and the relationships among angle measures in polygons.
