Perusasema

Perusasema is a Finnish term meaning base station or basic station. It is used in various technical and organizational contexts to denote a central or default node within a system. The word combines perus- (basic, fundamental) with asema (station). In Finnish usage, perusasema is largely synonymous with the English term base station, especially in telecommunications and information technology.

In telecommunications, perusasema refers to the radio site that communicates with mobile devices and connects to the core network. A typical perusasema includes antennas, radio equipment (transceivers), and a link to the backhaul network. It forms part of the broader base station subsystem (BSS) and works under the control of network elements like the base station controller or its modern equivalents. The concept is central to cellular networks such as GSM, WCDMA, LTE and 5G, where base stations are deployed to provide coverage and capacity.

Beyond mobile networks, the term can be used in other systems to denote a primary or default station, hub, or reference point. For example, in sensor networks or industrial automation, a perusasema may serve as a data collection point or a base reference from which other nodes operate.
