Personalausweises

The Personalausweis, often referred to as the "identity card" in English, is an official document issued to German citizens. It serves as a primary form of identification within Germany and is also recognized for travel within the European Union and Schengen Area countries. The card contains personal data such as name, date and place of birth, nationality, and a photograph. It also includes a unique serial number and the expiry date.

Modern Personalausweise are equipped with an electronic chip that stores additional data, including biometric information like fingerprints and a digital signature. This electronic function, known as the eID function, allows for secure online identification and authentication. Citizens can use this feature to access various online government services and private sector portals. The issuance and regulation of the Personalausweis are governed by the German Identity Card Act. The card is typically valid for ten years for adults and six years for individuals under 24. Its introduction aimed to enhance security and streamline digital processes for citizens.
