The pure compound is unstable and decomposes readily, especially in the presence of impurities, to form water and oxygen.

Peroksidisen is toxic and can cause skin and eye irritation. It is also a potent oxidizer and can react violently with reducing agents, organic materials, and certain metals. Proper handling and storage procedures are essential to prevent accidents and ensure safety.

Peroksidisen has been used in various applications throughout history. It was first synthesized in 1818 by Louis-Jacques Thenard. In the early 20th century, it was used as a propellant in the first liquid-fueled rockets, including the German V-2 and the American Vengeance Weapon.
