Perkolator

Perkolator, sometimes spelled perkolator in catalogs and non-English contexts, is a coffee brewing device that uses the percolation method to extract flavor from ground coffee. In a typical stovetop or electric unit, water is heated in a lower chamber. When it boils, the water is forced up through a vertical outlet tube and pours over a perforated basket containing coffee grounds. The brew then drips back down into the lower chamber, and the cycle repeats, brewing stronger coffee until the user stops the process or the water runs out.

History and usage: Percolators rose to domestic prominence in the early to mid-20th century, long before drip-filter machines became common. They remain favored for camping and other settings where simple, rugged equipment is advantageous. Two main forms exist: traditional stovetop percolators, often made of aluminum or stainless steel, and electric percolators, which include an integrated heating element and a separate carafe or lid.

Characteristics: The continual cycling tends to produce a bold, robust cup. If left running too long, the coffee can become overextracted and bitter. Perkolators can also cause oils and fines to circulate back into the cup, influencing mouthfeel and clarity. They are easy to clean but may require more attention to avoid scorching or heat damage.

Notes on terminology: The spelling perkolator is a variant found in some markets or older catalogs; in standard English the term percolator is predominant. The device is distinct from modern drip and pressure-based espresso equipment.
