Perintätapauksia refers to legal cases in Finland that involve inheritance and estate settlements. These cases can arise when a person dies, and their assets, property, and debts need to be distributed among their heirs. Finnish inheritance law, governed primarily by the Inheritance and Gift Act (Perintö- ja lahjaverolaki), outlines the rights and responsibilities of both the deceased and the heirs.

Typically, a perintätapaus begins with the notification of death to the local register office. Following this, a probate inventory (perukirja) must be compiled within three months of the death. This document lists all the deceased's assets and debts, as well as identifying the heirs. The probate inventory is crucial for determining inheritance tax liability and for the subsequent division of the estate.

The division of the estate (ositus) can occur in various ways. If there is a will (testamentti), it usually guides the distribution, though Finnish law has provisions for compulsory shares for certain close relatives. If there is no will, the estate is divided according to statutory succession rules. Heirs can choose to accept the inheritance, renounce it, or accept it under the benefit of inventory, which limits their liability to the value of the inherited assets. Disputes over inheritance, such as challenges to a will or disagreements about the valuation of assets, can lead to court proceedings, making them significant perintätapauksia. The process aims to ensure a fair and legal transfer of property from the deceased to their rightful beneficiaries.
