Perinnöllisyyssääntö, often translated as the "law of inheritance" or "rule of heredity," is a foundational concept in genetics that describes how traits are passed from parents to offspring. While the term itself might not be a universally standardized scientific term like Mendel's laws, it encapsulates the general principles underlying genetic inheritance. In essence, it refers to the predictable patterns observed in the transmission of genetic information through generations.

Historically, early observations of inheritance, even before the discovery of DNA and genes, hinted at such rules. People noticed that offspring often resembled their parents, suggesting a mechanism for carrying over characteristics. Gregor Mendel's experiments with pea plants in the mid-19th century provided the first rigorous scientific framework for understanding these patterns. His work established that traits are determined by discrete units (now known as genes) that are inherited in specific ratios, leading to his famous laws of segregation and independent assortment.

Modern genetics has greatly expanded upon these early principles.
