Perhepedigreitä, often translated as family pedigrees or family trees, are visual representations of familial relationships over multiple generations. They are commonly used in fields such as genealogy, genetics, and medicine to track the inheritance of traits, diseases, or other characteristics. A pedigree chart typically uses standardized symbols to represent individuals, their sex, their relationship to one another, and their affected status regarding a particular trait. Circles usually denote females and squares denote males. Individuals connected by a horizontal line indicate a mating. Offspring are shown below their parents, connected by vertical lines. Shading or filling in of a symbol indicates that the individual possesses the trait being studied.

The construction of a pedigree begins with a specific individual, known as the proband or propositus, who is the starting point for the investigation. Information is gathered from the proband and other family members, often through interviews or existing records, to trace ancestral and descendant lines. By examining patterns of inheritance within a pedigree, researchers can infer whether a trait is dominant or recessive, autosomal or sex-linked, and assess the probability of future generations inheriting the trait. This makes pedigrees invaluable tools for genetic counseling, disease risk assessment, and understanding the complex history of families.
