Perfuusioon

Perfuusioon is a medical procedure used to temporarily replace the function of an organ, such as the heart or lungs, during surgery. It involves diverting blood flow away from the organ and through a machine, known as a heart-lung machine or bypass machine. This machine oxygenates the blood, removes carbon dioxide, and pumps it back into the body, maintaining circulation and organ function while surgeons operate on the affected area.

The process typically begins by inserting cannulas into major blood vessels to reroute blood to the bypass machine. The machine then circulates the blood, maintaining vital organ perfusion. Once the surgical procedure is complete, the cannulas are removed, and blood flow is gradually restored to the organ. Perfuusioon is most commonly associated with cardiac surgery, enabling surgeons to operate on a still heart. However, it can also be used in other complex surgeries requiring temporary organ support. Careful monitoring of the patient's physiological status throughout the procedure is crucial to ensure safety and prevent complications.
