Techniques and equipment: perfusion systems use pumps (roller or centrifugal), reservoirs, cannulas, oxygenators, and heat exchangers to regulate temperature. Monitoring measures include flow and pressure sensors, temperature probes, blood gas analysis, and imaging or tissue viability assays.

Applications: organ preservation for transplantation, assessment of donor organs, pharmacokinetic and toxicology studies in isolated organs, and research in tissue engineering. Perfusion conditions can be normothermic or hypothermic, with specific regimens chosen to minimize ischemia-reperfusion injury.

Challenges: managing shear stress, edema, inflammatory responses, and endothelial dysfunction; variability in perfusate composition; logistics of maintaining sterile, physiologically balanced systems. Ongoing research seeks to optimize perfusion conditions for improved viability and function.
