Performatiivisuuskäsitteet, or performativity concepts, refer to a range of theoretical ideas that explore how actions, speech, and behaviors create and shape reality, rather than simply reflecting it. Originating in linguistics and philosophy, these concepts emphasize that certain utterances or performances don't just describe a state of affairs but actively bring it into being. For example, saying "I now pronounce you husband and wife" in the context of a wedding ceremony doesn't describe a pre-existing marital status; it creates it.

In social sciences, performativity extends beyond linguistic acts to encompass the way social identities, norms, and institutions are constructed through repeated, stylized performances. Judith Butler's work on gender is a prominent example, where gender is understood not as an internal essence but as a performance constituted through a series of repeated actions and social expectations. Similarly, organizational routines, rituals, and even the presentation of self in everyday life can be analyzed through the lens of performativity, highlighting how these recurring actions solidify certain understandings of the world and our place within it. The key idea is that performance is constitutive, meaning it actively produces the very phenomena it appears to represent. This contrasts with a view where actions are merely expressive of an underlying reality.
