Perdirbtus is a term used in information science and digital preservation to denote a state in which digital information objects survive as data but become effectively unrecoverable for practical purposes. In this condition, bits may exist on storage media, yet the necessary software, documentation, or cryptographic keys to interpret those bits are unavailable or unusable.

Etymology and history: Perdirbtus is a neologism coined in the 21st century by practitioners describing a failure mode related to obsolescence and loss of interpretive context. The word combines a Latin-inspired prefix per- with a constructed suffix -dirbtus to imply degradation and lost meaning. It is not part of any formal standard but appears in analytical discussions and case studies within the digital preservation community.

Definition and mechanisms: Perdirbtus arises through format obsolescence, obsolete codecs, missing or corrupted metadata and provenance records, or the loss of software environments necessary to render data. It differs from physical bit rot in that the data may remain physically intact yet indecipherable. It can be exacerbated by insufficient documentation, restrictive licenses, or fragmented archiving practices. Examples include old proprietary file formats, obsolete media readers, or data relying on extinct software libraries.

Mitigation and critique: Proponents advocate regular format migration, open standards, redundant storage with independent tooling, and rich metadata schemas to preserve interpretability. Critics caution that over-migration can introduce fidelity risks or resource burdens, and that some loss of interpretability may be inevitable over long time horizons.
