Percipiebat is a third-person singular, imperfect indicative form of the Latin verb percipio, meaning “to perceive” or “to apprehend.” The verb percipio itself is formed from the prefix per- “through” and cipes, the stem of capio “to take” or “to seize.” As a perfect passive participle, percipiebat translates roughly to “he/she was perceiving” or “he/she was abiding by.” In classical Latin prose, this form is often used to describe gradual, ongoing perception or influence, especially in philosophical or rhetorical contexts where the subject is understood to be absorbing or internalizing an idea.

The grammatical construction of percipiebat follows the ordinary rule for third conjugation verbs: the stem percip- precedes the imperfect ending -iebat.
