Perämieskoukku

Perämieskoukku, literally translated as "helmsman's hook" or "mate's hook" in English, refers to a specific type of grappling hook or boarding hook historically used in maritime contexts. These hooks were designed with a long handle and a single, sharp barb or hook at one end. Their primary function was to assist in boarding other vessels during naval combat or to secure ships together for various purposes.

The perämieskoukku was a crucial piece of equipment for sailors and boarding parties. When approaching an enemy ship, a skilled crew member would throw the hook with considerable force, aiming to catch onto the railing, rigging, or any other suitable part of the target vessel. Once the hook was firmly embedded, it provided a secure point for the boarding party to pull themselves across the gap between the ships or to hold the vessels in close proximity.
