Penibaetic

Penibaetic refers to the terrain that lies on the leeward side of the main mountain range in the Baetic System of southern Spain. This region is characterized by a combination of mountain valleys and isolated peaks that create a unique landscape.

Geologically, the Penibaetic terrain is older than the mountains that rise on the windward side of the Baetic System. This is evident in the distinct differences in the rock formations found in the two regions, with the Penibaetic side typically having more weathered and worn-down rocks.

The Penibaetic region is often composed of vast plateaus, interspersed with smaller mountain ranges and separated by numerous valleys. These valleys can contain slow-flowing rivers that carry excessive water away from the highlands. The variation in elevation and geology in this region has, in turn, led to a diverse array of flora and fauna.
