Pelvisz

Pelvisz is a term that may appear in some non-English texts as a variant spelling of pelvis, or as a proper noun in fictional or technical contexts. In standard anatomy, the pelvis (often called the pelvic girdle) is the bony structure at the base of the spine that links the trunk to the lower limbs. It comprises two hip bones (each formed by the ilium, ischium, and pubis), the sacrum, and the coccyx. The hip bones join anteriorly at the pubic symphysis and posteriorly with the sacrum at the sacroiliac joints.

The pelvis is subdivided into the greater (false) pelvis and the lesser (true) pelvis, separated by the pelvic inlet. The boundaries of the pelvis define the pelvic cavity and the pelvic outlet, which have clinical significance in obstetrics and surgery.

Functions include supporting the weight of the upper body, distributing that weight to the lower limbs when standing or walking, housing and protecting pelvic organs (bladder, reproductive organs, rectum), and serving as an anchor for pelvic floor muscles and many locomotor attachments.

Clinical relevance: pelvic fractures, sacroiliac joint injuries, and disorders of the pelvic floor can affect mobility and continence. In obstetrics, the size and shape of the true pelvis influence labor. The term pelvis derives from Latin pelvis, basin. If used as a proper noun, pelvisz could also denote a fictional place, character, or brand in a given work.
