Paygrades

Paygrades are a standardized system used by organizations, particularly within government agencies, military, and large corporations, to categorize employee salaries based on their roles, responsibilities, and experience levels. The system assigns a specific pay grade to each position, which determines the salary range an employee can earn, facilitating equitable compensation practices and clear career progression pathways.

Typically, paygrades are organized into hierarchical levels, with lower grades corresponding to entry-level positions and higher grades indicating more senior or specialized roles. Many agencies adopt structured pay scale frameworks such as the General Schedule (GS) used by the United States federal government, which includes numerous pay grades designated by numbers (e.g., GS-1 to GS-15).
