Patternindekser, often translated as pattern indexes or signature indexes, are data structures used in computer science to efficiently search for patterns within larger datasets. They are particularly relevant in areas like text searching, bioinformatics, and database management. The core idea behind a pattern index is to pre-process the data in a way that allows for rapid retrieval of all occurrences of a specific pattern.

Different types of pattern indexes exist, each with its own strengths and weaknesses. Suffix trees and suffix arrays are classic examples of pattern indexes that excel at exact string matching. They represent all possible suffixes of a given text in a compressed form, enabling logarithmic time searches for patterns. More advanced techniques, such as generalized suffix trees, can handle searching across multiple documents simultaneously.

In practice, the creation of a pattern index involves a significant upfront computational cost. However, this cost is amortized over many subsequent searches. Once built, these indexes can dramatically speed up the process of finding specific sequences or substrings. The choice of which pattern index to use depends heavily on the nature of the data, the types of queries expected, and the available memory resources. Applications range from finding words in a document to identifying genes in a DNA sequence.
