Patroontekst

Patroontekst is a Dutch term used to describe the contextual environment in which a pattern (patroon) is observed or applied. It refers to information from surrounding elements—such as neighboring tokens, sentences, data fields, or structural features—that influences how a pattern is interpreted, validated, or executed.

In linguistic and data-analytic practice, patroontekst helps distinguish between patterns that may have different meanings or functions depending on context. For instance, a recurring phrase can function as a noun phrase in some contexts and as a verb phrase in others; the surrounding words and syntactic cues constitute the patroontekst that guides interpretation.

Applications of patroontekst appear in rule-based text processing, pattern recognition, corpus annotation, and templating. In a rule engine or analysis tool, a pattern is only considered a match when the patroontekst conditions are satisfied, such as certain part-of-speech tags, proximity to other terms, or hierarchical structure. This concept supports more precise pattern detection by accounting for the influence of surrounding context rather than treating patterns in isolation.
