Patinázást

Patinázást, often translated as patination or aging, refers to the process by which a surface develops a visible layer of alteration due to age, exposure to the environment, or specific treatment. This alteration can manifest as changes in color, texture, or reflectivity. It is a natural phenomenon that occurs on a wide variety of materials, including metals, wood, stone, and even certain types of plastic.

In the context of metals, patination is commonly observed on copper and its alloys, such as bronze, leading to the formation of a green or bluish-green layer known as verdigris. This is a result of oxidation and the interaction of the metal with atmospheric elements like moisture and carbon dioxide. Artists and conservators sometimes deliberately induce patination to achieve desired aesthetic effects or to protect the underlying material.

For wood, patination can involve weathering, where exposure to sunlight and rain causes the surface to gray and become more textured. This is often seen on outdoor wooden structures like fences and decks. Similarly, stone surfaces, particularly those exposed to the elements, can develop a patina through a slow process of erosion and the growth of lichens and mosses. The term patinázást, therefore, encompasses a broad range of surface transformations that contribute to the character and appearance of objects over time.
