Patinoituu

Patinoituu is a Finnish verb meaning “to become patinated” or “to develop a patina.” A patina is a thin, often visually distinct outer layer formed on certain materials, most commonly metals, as a result of aging, oxidation, or chemical treatment. The patina changes the color and texture of the surface and can be either a sign of aging or something deliberately produced for aesthetic or conservation reasons.

The concept is widely used in metalworking, conservation, art, and design. Patination can occur naturally, for example when copper or bronze surfaces darken and acquire a greenish or brownish patina through exposure to air and moisture. It can also be induced by chemical baths, heat, or specialized patination techniques to achieve a controlled appearance. In Finnish usage, patina and patinoituminen carry both scientific and cultural connotations. They appear in discussions of restoration, historical authenticity, and the valuation of aged aesthetics in objects such as sculptures, jewelry, architecture, and furniture. The concept can also be used metaphorically to describe the aging or character gained by people, places, or objects over time.
