Passivációs

Passivációs is a term primarily used in metallurgy and electrochemistry to describe the formation of a protective layer on the surface of a metal. This layer, often an oxide or a nitride, significantly reduces the metal's chemical reactivity, making it less prone to corrosion or other unwanted chemical reactions. The process can occur spontaneously under certain environmental conditions, such as exposure to oxygen or specific chemical solutions, or it can be induced through controlled treatments.

The effectiveness of a passivating layer depends on its composition, thickness, and adherence to the underlying metal. For example, stainless steel owes its corrosion resistance to a thin, invisible layer of chromium oxide that forms on its surface. This passive layer acts as a barrier, preventing corrosive agents from reaching the bulk metal. In some cases, passivación can be intentionally enhanced through methods like electropolishing or chemical treatments to create a more robust protective film. Understanding and controlling passivációs is crucial in many industrial applications, from manufacturing to material science, to ensure the longevity and performance of metal components.
