Partisans

Partisans are members of irregular armed groups that wage guerrilla warfare or resistance against occupying or governing powers, typically operating outside formal military structures. The term also refers to supporters or loyalists of a political party in a democratic system.

Etymology and historical usage: The word derives from Italian partigiano and French partisan. It gained prominence in modern conflicts as guerrilla or resistance fighters who operate behind enemy lines or in contested regions. During World War II, partisan movements were active across Europe and Asia. Notable examples include the Yugoslav Partisans, led by Josip Broz Tito, who conducted large-scale operations against Axis forces and later formed the core of the postwar Yugoslav People's Army. In France, Italy, Greece, and other countries, partisan bands conducted sabotage, intelligence gathering, and ambush operations, often collaborating with or supporting Allied efforts.
