Partikelanläggningar, often translated as particle facilities or particle installations, are specialized sites designed for the research, production, or manipulation of subatomic particles. These facilities are crucial for advancing our understanding of fundamental physics, developing new technologies, and in some cases, for medical applications.

The most prominent type of particle facility is the particle accelerator. These machines use electromagnetic fields to propel charged particles to very high speeds, approaching the speed of light. By colliding these high-energy particles with a target or with each other, scientists can study the resulting debris, which can reveal the existence of new particles or shed light on fundamental forces. Examples include the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN and the Superconducting Super Collider (SSC) in Texas, though the latter was never completed.

Beyond accelerators, particle facilities can also encompass particle detectors, which are designed to observe and measure the properties of particles produced in collisions or from other sources. These detectors are often massive and complex instruments, utilizing various physical principles to identify and track particles. Furthermore, some facilities are dedicated to producing specific types of particles for use in research or industry, such as neutron sources or synchrotron light sources.

The applications of particle facilities extend beyond pure physics research. Medical applications include particle therapy for cancer treatment, where beams of protons or carbon ions are used to precisely target and destroy tumors. Industrial uses can involve material science research, where particle beams are employed to analyze or modify materials. Maintaining and operating these facilities requires significant expertise in physics, engineering, and computing, as well as substantial financial investment.
