Pariteettiarvoa

Pariteettiarvo, often translated as parity value or simply parity, is a concept in computer science and digital electronics that refers to the evenness or oddness of the number of set bits (bits with a value of 1) in a binary number. This value is used for error detection during data transmission.

There are two main types of parity: even parity and odd parity. With even parity, a parity bit is added to a binary string such that the total number of 1s in the string, including the parity bit, is an even number. If the original string has an even number of 1s, the parity bit is set to 0. If the original string has an odd number of 1s, the parity bit is set to 1. Conversely, with odd parity, the parity bit is added to ensure the total number of 1s is an odd number.

Parity checking is a simple form of error detection. When data is transmitted, the sender calculates the parity of the data and appends the parity bit. The receiver then recalculates the parity of the received data, including the received parity bit. If the calculated parity matches the received parity, it is assumed that the data was transmitted correctly. If they do not match, an error is detected. However, parity checking can only detect an odd number of bit errors. If an even number of bits are flipped during transmission, the parity will still match, and the error will go undetected.
