Paristokeräily refers to the collection and recycling of used batteries in Finland. It is an organized system aimed at environmental protection and resource recovery. The primary goal is to prevent hazardous materials present in batteries from entering landfills, where they can leach into the soil and groundwater.

The collection system is managed by manufacturers and importers, who are responsible for financing the infrastructure and logistics of battery recycling. Consumers can return their used batteries free of charge to designated collection points. These points are commonly found in retail stores selling batteries, supermarkets, and municipal waste collection centers.

Various types of batteries are accepted, including alkaline, zinc-carbon, button cells, and rechargeable batteries. Lithium-ion batteries, commonly found in mobile phones and laptops, also have their own specific collection channels to ensure safe handling due to their higher energy density.

Once collected, batteries are transported to specialized processing facilities. Here, they are sorted, and valuable materials such as metals like iron, zinc, manganese, and nickel are recovered. The remaining components are treated to neutralize any hazardous substances before final disposal or recycling.

Paristokeräily plays a crucial role in promoting a circular economy by reclaiming valuable resources and reducing the environmental impact of battery waste. Public awareness campaigns are often conducted to encourage participation and educate citizens about the importance of proper battery disposal.
