Parfümstoffen

Parfümstoffe, also known as fragrance ingredients or perfume compounds, are substances that impart scent. They are used extensively in the creation of perfumes, colognes, and scented products such as soaps, detergents, cosmetics, and air fresheners. These substances can be derived from natural sources like flowers, fruits, spices, woods, and resins, or they can be synthesized chemically in laboratories.

Essential oils, absolutes, and resins are common examples of naturally derived fragrance materials. The composition of a fragrance is a complex blend of many different parfümstoffe, carefully selected and combined by perfumers, also known as "noses." These ingredients are typically categorized by their olfactory families, such as floral, woody, oriental, and fresh, and are further classified by their volatility into top, middle, and base notes, which determine how the scent evolves over time. The development and use of parfümstoffe are subject to regulations and safety assessments by organizations like the International Fragrance Association (IFRA) to ensure consumer safety and responsible use.
