Parentoffspring

Parentoffspring is a term used to describe the biological and social relationship between a parent and their offspring. It encompasses genetic relatedness, parental care, socialization, and the transmission of genes, traits, and cultural knowledge across generations.

Genetic relationship: In sexually reproducing species, each offspring inherits about half of its nuclear genes from each parent, giving a coefficient of relatedness around 0.5. Maternally inherited mitochondrial DNA is typically passed from mother to offspring, while paternal mitochondrial inheritance is exceedingly rare. Genomic imprinting and other exceptions can modify gene expression without changing the underlying relatedness.

Parental care and investment: Parental care includes nursing, feeding, protection, teaching, and social shaping. Evolutionary theory of parental investment (Trivers, 1974) explains how parents allocate resources between current offspring and future reproduction, with strategies differing by species, environment, and parent.

Variation across taxa and humans: Some species provide extensive care; others provide minimal. Altricial young require care after birth; precocial young require less. In humans, family structures can include biological parents, adoptive parents, and step-parents, reflecting social rather than purely genetic connections.
