Paradigmer refers to an agent that creates, frames, or propagates a paradigm within a domain. The term is a coinage combining paradigm with the agentive suffix -er, indicating a role rather than a phenomenon. A paradigmer may be an individual, a research team, an organization, or an algorithmic system that selects problems, constructs models, and disseminates norms, methods, and language that shape what counts as legitimate knowledge and practice.

Functions of a paradigmer include identifying anomalies, proposing alternative models, validating them through evidence or demonstration, and spreading them through publications, curricula, policy, and media. In science, such actors can accelerate or redirect inquiry; in industry and culture, they can redefine standards of performance, ethics, or design. The term also highlights how certain actors influence which questions are asked and which methods are considered credible.

Paradigmer is often discussed in relation to paradigm shifts. Unlike the shift itself, a paradigmer is the agent that may stimulate or organize such a shift. The concept overlaps with ideas like norm entrepreneurs, change agents, and gatekeepers.

Critiques highlight that paradigmers can reinforce existing power structures, suppress dissent, or promote fashionable but fragile models. Proponents argue that effective paradigmers balance novelty with rigor, ensure reproducibility, and incorporate diverse perspectives. Because the term is not widely standardized, its precise scope varies by context. It is used more in theoretical analyses, speculative discourse, and discussions of innovation and organizational change rather than as a formal designation in most disciplines.
