Pangatähtede

Pangatähtede, also known as pangatärn or pangatärnid, are a group of small, nocturnal birds found in the forests of Estonia. They are part of the family Caprimulgidae, which includes nightjars and goatsuckers. Pangatähtede are characterized by their distinctive, heart-shaped wings and long tails, which they use for silent flight. Their most notable feature is the bright, red eyes that give them their name, which translates to "red-eyed" in English.

These birds are known for their unique mating behavior. During the breeding season, the male pangatähtede performs a courtship display by flying in a figure-eight pattern while making a series of loud, rhythmic calls. This display is believed to attract potential mates and defend their territory. The female pangatähtede lays a single egg in a nest made of plant materials, which she incubates for about 18 days. The chick is fed by both parents and becomes independent after approximately 20 days.

Pangatähtede are insectivorous, feeding on a variety of insects and other small invertebrates. They are typically solitary birds, except during the breeding season when pairs may remain together. Their population is currently stable, and they are not considered threatened. However, habitat loss and fragmentation due to human activities pose potential risks to their long-term survival. Conservation efforts focus on protecting and restoring their forest habitats to ensure the continued presence of pangatähtede in Estonia.
