Palkatummien is a term used in Finnish fiction and folklore to describe a class of small beings tied to wages and work, often appearing in stories about offices, factories, or administrative spaces.

The name combines elements related to palkka (salary) and tumma (dark). In various narratives, palkatummien are depicted as elusive, shadowy figures that oversee payroll calculations and wage distribution. They are usually portrayed as benevolent but strict, ensuring that workers are paid correctly and on time, while punishing careless bookkeeping.

They are said to dwell in hidden corners of archives, ledger rooms, or old payroll offices, appearing at the end of pay periods. They prefer quiet workspaces, and may be invoked or appeased through careful record-keeping, respectful communication about wages, and timely payroll submission. When ignored, folklore claims minor errors in accounting or delays.

The term is mostly found in contemporary fantasy narratives and niche folklore collections. It is not part of formal Finnish mythology and has no standardized description; different authors may adapt the beings to fit their setting.
