Paleoceanographers

Paleoceanographers are scientists who study the history of the oceans in order to understand past changes in Earth's climate system. They use a variety of geological and chemical techniques to reconstruct conditions in the oceans from hundreds to millions of years ago. Their work often involves analyzing sediment cores drilled from the ocean floor, which contain layers of fossilized microorganisms and chemical signatures that record past ocean temperatures, salinity, circulation patterns, and nutrient availability.

By examining the shells of tiny marine organisms, such as foraminifera, paleoceanographers can determine the isotopic composition of the water in which they lived, providing insights into past temperatures.
