Paldea

Paldea is a fictional region in the Pokémon video game series, introduced with Pokémon Scarlet and Violet in 2022. It is presented as an open-world setting inspired by the Iberian Peninsula, featuring diverse landscapes that range from coastal plains to mountains and urban centers.

Geography and notable locations: Paldea contains several notable cities and towns, including Mesagoza, Levincia, Cascarrafa, Medali, and Porto Marinada. The region centers on Area Zero, a large crater area that houses advanced research facilities and is connected to the Time-Space Distortions that appear during the game’s late stages. The map emphasizes exploration and seamless travel across varied biomes.

Society and institutions: The region hosts a unified academy system, with players attending Naranja Academy in Scarlet or Uva Academy in Violet. The Paldean region is governed through local institutions and champions who oversee official competitions. The champion Geeta serves as Paldea’s top trainer in the championships that conclude the main storyline.

Gameplay and features: Paldea introduced an open-world design built around three intertwined story threads: Victory Road, a gym-based path to becoming champion; Path of Legends, a quest for special herbs known as Herba Mystica; and Starfall Street, which involves confronting Team Star. A new Terastal phenomenon allows Pokémon to crystallize and alter their types during battles. The region’s legendary ride Pokémon, Koraidon (Scarlet) and Miraidon (Violet), enable traversal across the landscape.

Pokémon and culture: Paldea debuts numerous new Pokémon and regional forms, expanding the Paldea Pokédex with native species and variants. Area Zero features post-game exploration tied to the region’s science fiction elements and the continued study of its time-space anomalies.
