Paktya

Paktya, also spelled Paktia, is a province in eastern Afghanistan. The provincial capital is Gardez. The province lies in the eastern highlands, with a landscape of rugged mountains and river valleys that are part of the Hindu Kush. Climate ranges from cold winters in the highlands to hot summers in the valleys.

Population and language: The population is predominantly Pashtun. The principal language is Pashto, with Dari spoken by minority communities.

Administration: The province is divided into several districts; the governor administers civil affairs with security forces under national control.

Economy: Agriculture is the mainstay. Wheat, maize, and barley are common crops, with orchards of pomegranates, grapes, and almonds in suitable districts. Livestock herding is also important. The economy is mixed with some informal trade and limited infrastructure.

History: The area has long been part of eastern Afghanistan's historical dynamics. It was affected by decades of conflict, including the Soviet-Afghan War and post-2001 insurgencies, with varying levels of government presence.
